More October Finishes

Started: 10/9/2017
Finished: 10/11/2017

This was in a Enjoy Cross Stitch at Christmas magazine.  It was stitched and finished using the free materials included.  The only change I made was to substitute green floss for the yellow floss called for by the chart as it didn't seem very Christmas-y.  Kyleigh has taken a liking to this ornament so it will probably be one of her Christmas gifts this year.

Started: 10/12/2017
Finished: 10/13/2017

This was part of the Challenge Lucie section of Cross Stitch Crazy #225.  It's stitched as called for with DMC on 14-count white Aida.  I've since found the same girl on a seahorse which I'd also like to stitch.

This is for Kyleigh's quilt because she likes mermaids and dolphins.

Started: 10/14/17
Finished: 10/17/2017

Started: 10/17/2017
Finished: 10/20/2017

These two hearts were the free cover kit from an older Cross Stitch Crazy magazine. They're stitched as charted (and finished) with the materials in the kit.  I did have to use some DMC from my stash as I ran out of two of the colors.  Fortunately, they matched exactly.  I also had to use my own 14-count Aida for the second heart since the pre-cut heart included in the kit was too small.

I made them into Christmas ornaments, but they probably won't be going on my tree.  I took these and several other pieces to a boutique at our church.  These didn't sell, but three others did.

Started: 10/20/2017
Finished: 10/28/2017

This Kokeshi Doll card was the free cover kit for the March 2013 Cross Stitcher magazine.  It's stitched as charted and also finished with the materials in the kit.

This one also went to the Christmas boutique, but didn't sell.

Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Packing Event

I know it's been a long time since I've posted anything and I have a lot of catching up to do, but I decided to start posting with current events and finishes instead of continually putting it off to do the catch-up posts first.

Last night was the Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Packing event at our church/school.  This is an annual event that has replaced having the students each pack their own boxes.  It starts with a spaghetti dinner and ends with the blessing of the boxes in the bus.  The goal was 1,000 boxes.

There was organized chaos as usual.  The little girl with the braid in the gray shirt is Kyleigh.
After picking up a Boy or Girl box and deciding on an age range, you filled the box with school supplies, toiletries, age appropriate toys and/or stuffed animals.  The little girl with Kyleigh is a friend of hers.  They packed together the entire evening.
Once the box was packed to your satisfaction, you wrote a note to the recipient, put it in the box, marked the age range and then put a rubber band around the box to keep it closed.  They had papers with various messages you could copy or you could make up your own.
At this point you could take a picture commemorating the evening before you took the box to be loaded onto the bus (I forgot to take a picture of the bus.)
As the evening continued, people started packing more than one box at a time.  This was our last time through where we did two boxes each.  Between the three of us, we packed 15 boxes.

Pumpkin Patch Palooza

Every year Irvine Park puts on the Pumpkin Patch Palooza and the Girl Scouts host an event there.  It was supposed to be held last Sunday afternoon, but Irvine Park was being used as the staging area for the Corona fires so it was rescheduled for this morning.  Kyleigh was supposed to be at her dad's today, but she begged to be allowed to go and Daddy and Nonnie agreed if Janice would pick her up (at 7:00 a.m.)

They each got a free pumpkin, a hayride and lunch.  They visited the haunted house, did some crafts and got a patch to be sewn on the back of their vests.

Happy Dance - Backpack Patch - Rainbow

Started: 10/5/2017
Finished: 10/7/2017

This came from the Crazy Kids section of Cross Stitch Crazy #233 and was designed by Durene Jones.  It was meant to be stitched on 14-count Aida and is supposed to have a satin stitched edge with part of the fabric showing.  Since it's supposed to go on a backpack, I stitched it on 14-count plastic canvas and Janice will sew it onto Kyleigh's backpack using the colors around the edges.

There are two more designs (sun and unicorn) in this section, but Kyleigh only wanted this one.
I know it seems like I've been doing a lot of stitching for her lately, but she really appreciates my stitching so that makes it worthwhile.

Happy Dance - Patchwork Alphabet - Letter K (again)

Started: 10/3/2017
Finished: 10/5/20117

Since Kyleigh didn't want the backstitching done on the K stitched on her duckling, I decided to stitch another K with the backstitching.  This time, I used the chart for the letter Z because it was easy to translate.  This is from the Patchwork Alphabet in Cross Stitch Crazy 225.

This one will go on Kyleigh's quilt which is still in progress, but I do hope to finish all the squares by Christmas.

Happy Dance - Christmas Tree and Present

 Started: 9/23/2017
Finished: 9/24/2017
Started: 9/28/2017
Finished: 10/3/2017

These cards were the free cover kit from an older Cross Stitch Crazy magazine.  They're stitched and finished using the materials in the kit.  The kit claimed to contain plastic canvas, but actually included vinyl instead.  The only changes made were to leave off the Smyrna Crosses on each of the baubles on both designs.

They will go on my daughter's table at the Christmas Boutique next month and if not sold, will be sent to WOCS.

Happy Dance - Patchwork Alphabet - Letter K

 Started: 9/25/2017
Finished 9/27/2017

I don't remember when I bought it or if Kyleigh was with me, but I've had this duckling in my stash for quite a while.  Kyleigh has been waiting patiently for me to stitch something on the bib ever since she found it in my stash.  She finally got tired of waiting and decided to take it home with her.  I decided it was time to stitch  something when I rescued it from on top of her suitcase.
After looking through my UK magazines, I settled on this letter K.  It comes from Cross Stitch Crazy #225 and was part of the patchwork alphabet.  It called for backstitching, but Kyleigh was in a hurry to get it and decided it didn't need the backstitching.  I think she likes it!

Happy Dance - Wanda's Hat

Started: 9/21/2017
Finished: 9/22/2017

This is Wanda's Hat from the Mill Hill Autumn Harvest Collection.  It's stitched as called for with the materials in the kit, except that again, I used two strands of floss for the cross stitch instead of the three called for.

It's not a very good scan and looks much better in person.

I had planned on doing a bunch of Halloween ornaments and mounting them to my kitchen window, because they wouldn't be seen from inside the kitchen.  Unfortunately, I've realized that this won't work because I'd have to mount them on the outside of the window which would most likely lead to disappearing ornaments.  So it's back to the drawing board.

Two More Finishes

I'm continuing to alternate Mill Hill kits with the free cover kits from some UK magazines.  Once I put Santa's Secret aside earlier this week, I picked up Buttercup Kitty by Mill Hill which had already been started.

Buttercup Kitty
Finished: 9/18/2017

This was stitched with the materials in the kit, although I did use two strands for the cross stitching instead of three.  I also used beads for the eyes instead of french knots and I just noticed that she's  missing her whiskers.

I let my granddaughter go through my stash of Mill Hill ornaments and pick one for me to stitch her.  She chose this one and once I find out if she wants a pin, a magnet or an ornament, I'll FFO it and give it to her.

This kit is from 1995 and it's amazing how much the instructions have changed.  Also, all of the beads were done with a half cross stitch, even the petite ones, and there is no treasure.

Once this was completed, I picked out a cover kit to work on.
Happy Birthday Hedgehog
Started: 9/19/2017
Finished 9/21/2017

This is the free cover kit that came with World of Cross Stitching #258 and I knew immediately that I wanted to stitch it.  It's stitched as charted with the materials in the kit.

It will be FFO'd and put in my box of unknown purpose.  My daughter is doing a craft boutique in early November and I'm planning to place all of the items still in the box in a basket on her table to see if anyone will buy them.

WIP Wednesday - 9/20/2017

My only current WIP this week is Santa's Secret, a Dimensions Gold Petite kit.  I'm now approximately half way done with this project so it's been set aside for awhile.  The Dimensions Kit SAL Facebook group has a SAL a couple of times a month and I will pull it out again for the next one.

WIP Wednesday - 9/13/2017

I only have one WIP to show you this week.  I continued stitching on Santa's Secret. My current goal is to complete it to the halfway point before setting it aside.

Progress as of 9/6/2017
Progress as of 9/13/2017
The dark shadow through his eyes is from the hoop--I just removed it to do the scan.  There's a lot of backstitching in this piece, but the shading gives you a realistic picture without it.

This is a Dimensions Gold Petite kit and I'm stitching it for the Dimensions Kit SAL on Facebook.

WIP Wednesday - 9/6/2017

I have two currently active WIPs (and many more inactive ones).

The first is Buttercup Cat from Mill Hill.  When my granddaughter was here at the end of August, she went through my Mill Hill ornament stash and chose this one for Grandma to make for her.
I set it aside to participate in the Back to School, Back to Stitching SAL in the Dimensions Kit SAL Group that began on September 1st.

Happy Dance - Popcorn Card

Started: 8/23/2017
Finished: 8/30/2017

This was the free cover kit with Cross Stitch Crazy #233.  It's stitched using the materials in the kit except there are a few unintentional customizations, mostly in the tassel on his hat and the mitten with the bird on it.

Although I've stitched a couple of these lately, I don't really like the finishing since the cards don't perfectly (or sometimes even close to perfectly) line up with the stitching.  I still need to FFO this one.

BTW, this is my 25th finish of the year, most of them being fairly small.

Miscellaneous Photos from August

Our church has a prayer garden and one Sunday Janice caught Kyleigh there.
Because SAC closes for a week before school starts, Kyleigh spent some time at our house while Janice and Devin were at work.  For some reason, three kittens appeared in our driveway and one was extremely friendly and followed Kyleigh around.  It's big for a kitten, but it definitely isn't a full grown cat.  I haven't seen any of them since.
This was her expression when Janice told her she couldn't keep it.

Also because SAC was closed, Janice, Devin and Kyleigh took a short vacation to San Diego and spent some time at a hotel Devin stayed at when he was a child.  Kyleigh had a chance to view the eclipse while there using special glasses provided by a local library.

Yes, she's in the water.  She's a fish and spent a lot of time there.  She also got to ride a paddle board some friends she knew from SAC had and some kind of floating device that Janice rented.  That's her standing in the front.

She also got to do the ropes course at Belmont Park.
All in all they had a wonderful time and plan to make this an annual occurrence.

Important Day in My Family

August 29th is important for two reasons this year!  First today is the first day of fourth grade for Kyleigh. She met her teacher last Thursday and is excited to have a man this year.  Below is this year's obligatory 1st Day of School picture.

The second reason that August 29th is important is that I gave birth to my daughter on this day in 1981,  That means Janice is celebrating her 36th birthday today.  We can't get together tonight, because both David and Devin work, but we're making plans for Thursday.

Happy Dance - Red Wagon

Started: 8/17/2017
Finished: 8/23/2017

This is Red Wagon, part of the Winter Holiday Collection by Mill Hill.  It's stitched as charted with the materials provided except that I only used two strands of floss for the cross stitching as I like to be able to use the loop start.

I added a hanger of leftover beads and it will be hanging on my Christmas tree this year.

Happy Dance - Flower Fairy

Started: 8/12/2017
Finished: 8/17/2017

This is the free cover kit that came with the World of Cross Stitching #252.  According to the magazine, this is the Scentless Mayweed Fairy.  It was stitched as charted and finished with the materials provided.  It has been added to my box of unknown purpose for now.

Happy Dance - Kris Kringle

Started: 8/8/2017
Finished: 8/12/2017

This is one of the Charmed Santas from Mill Hill.  It's stitched according to the directions with the materials provided in the kit with the exception that I used two strands for the cross stitch instead of three.

The hat and face are stitched separately and then glued together.  I made the hanger out of leftover beads and it will be hanging on my tree come Christmas time.  I have a bunch of these in my stash so you'll be seeing more of them in the coming months.

Kyleigh at the Angels' Game

The Angels had a day game yesterday and the SAC that Kyleigh attends took advantage of that fact and attended the game.  Since grandpa works in the control room and Janice told him where they'd be sitting, Kyleigh and her friends spent some time on the video board.  These pictures are taken from the monitor at grandpa's station in the control room.  When Kyleigh saw the pictures, she thought she had been on television.  BTW, the Angels won!

Happy Dance- Summer Rose Card

Started: 8/4/2017
Finished: 8/8/2017

This was the free cover kit from the World of Cross Stitching #256.  It's stitched with the materials in the kit except that I changed the backstitching on the leaves and stem from the same red as the rose to DMC 895.  It's been made into a card and has been added to my drawer of unknown purpose.

A Busy Weekend

After Kyleigh got home from camp, we went to a nearby McDonald's for a late lunch and then she got "thrown into the bathtub" for a much needed shower and hair wash.  Then the three of us (Janice, Kyleigh and I) went to the Angels' game with "Uncle" Bob.  This is what Kyleigh and Bob do during most of the game although usually they both have rally monkeys.
Saturday morning we met for breakfast and then headed over to the local Home Depot for the Kids' Workshop.  These are held the first Saturday of the month and the materials, necessary tools and instructions are free.  The child gets an apron and a pin for each workshop completed.   Today the kids built Penske Truck.
On the way back to the car, we walked past some sheds and Kyleigh took the opportunity to test out the wheels on the truck.

After that we went and looked at a few condos (Janice has decided she doesn't want a 3-story one after all!).  Later Saturday evening, we went to Movie Night at our church.  There was a hot dog/pulled pork sandwich supper as well as candy and sodas and popcorn available during the movie.
There were also several games that Kyleigh participated in.

First, the sack race; she had quit hopping and started running at this point
The egg/spoon race; she won this one
Sunday, of course was church.  The kids have been doing serving projects such as rolling bandages, etc.  This week they made place mats for the Senior Moments luncheons.
